Aim 1.0 For Mac
Posted : admin On 31.08.2019Share this story. It has been many years since since I have seen those ubiquitous floppy disks that had proprietary access software and gave a free one month trial to America Online. In the early-to-mid 90s, as far as most people were concerned, AOL was the Internet. Not me, though; I used the real Internet via a shell account at Purdue University.

AOL was for n00bs, people afraid of telnet and gopher and pine. So I just used a piece of tape over the write-protect notch and had an endless supply of free floppy disks. But that was then; this is now. In those early days of dial-up access, AOL was a friendly, graphics-heavy BBS with its own walled garden of proprietary content 'channels' and e-mail system that offered access to the 'rest' of the Internet to its users. Now, in the age of broadband, AOL is mainly a portal, similar to Yahoo or MSN, offering original web-based content in addition to e-mail, Xdrive onlne storage, and AOL Instant Messenger. In fact, Instant Messenger is really the only AOL product I've ever personally used. And since I started using iChat, I've not even used AOL's own client for the AIM protocol.
Sep 30, 2008 - No, we're nowhere near the month of April, and yes: AIM is back on the Mac.
So it was with curiosity I read that an all-new, all-Mac software called. AOL Desktop for Mac is designed to be a one-stop shop for all your online needs. AOL's desktop software originally used the IE engine for web browsing, and then migrated to the Gecko engine after purchasing Netscape in 1998. The latest AOL Desktop for Mac has an integrated browser based on WebKit, the browser engine best-known for powering Apple's Safari. It also includes a mail reader, AIM client, and a customizable toolbar for quick access to AOL's original content.
AOL's Mac development team proudly stresses the fact that Desktop was built from the ground up to be a first-class Mac application, as opposed to previous desktop clients that just seemed like bad Windows ports. AOL's Lee Givens, Principal Product Manager for AOL Mac Products, told Ars, 'We started from the foundation; AOL Desktop for Mac was built from the ground up, using core Apple technologies so we can deliver a fast internet application. Since our browser is built on WebKit, our browser never becomes obsolete.' Desktop does indeed launch quickly, and runs smoothly.

The Cocoa-based toolbar is customizable from a drop-down sheet and allows the icons to be rearranged at will. The browser and AIM client both have tabbed windows. Everything seems to fit right in with a native look and feel. AOL Desktop's WebKit-based tabbed browser makes it easy to access all your favorite web content, including William Shatner. Well, almost. The Instant Messenger component looks and sounds (to me) exactly like it did over 10 years ago. All the annoying font colors and sizes, pixelated smileys, and annoying sound effects are just like I remember them. Re: trelby for mac.
I was half expecting to hear, 'You've got mail!' IChat still provides a far superior IM experience, which is ironic considering that AOL practically invented instant messaging as we know it.
AOL Instant Messenger: it's like it's 1996 all over again. AOL still offers the old desktop client for those that prefer it, as well as a separate AIM client and web-based e-mail access. Even those that use AOL's dial-up service can use AOL Connect to dial in and then use Safari, iChat, and Mail. So why develop a new desktop application? 'AOL Desktop for Mac is for our users who want a single application to handle their day-to-day work,' says Givens. Brian Heikes, VP of Desktop Products, commented, 'One of our new goals is to re-engage with Apple customers, on user experience, design, and technical aspects: WebKit, CoreData, etc.'
Givens adds, 'Yes, if you go back to Apple.Link, AOL has been working with Apple customers for over 20 years.' To be honest, though, AOL Desktop for Mac just leaves me scratching my head.

If you are a hard-core AOL user—especially if you use its e-mail—and would like a modern application to access it and AOL's original content, the application is well done and is certainly a vast improvement over the old client. But with other browsers, IM clients, and mail clients generally offering a superior experience, I find it hard to recommend over other solutions out there. Still, if you're interested, you can find out more about AOL Desktop for Mac and download it for yourself from AOL's.
