I don’t intend to be very active on this blog for the next few months for double top secret reasons that may or may not have to do with the characters C, S, and 5. I’ll focus on short and sweet posts, like this one. Here’s a little tidbit from the Help topic.

When you italicize or bold the first word of a bulleted or numbered list paragraph, the formatting is applied to the number as well, making it inconsistent with the rest of the numbering. Like this: See how the number 3 is italicized just like the first word? So what’s the solution? Apply a character style to the numbering.

Here’s what it says in Help: By default, bullets and numbers inherit some of their text formatting from the first character in the paragraph to which they’re attached. If the first character in one paragraph is different from the first characters in other paragraphs, the numbering or bullet character may appear inconsistent with the other list items. If this is not the formatting you desire, create a character style for numbers or bullets and apply it to your list by using the Bullets And Numbering dialog box. Now, back to the fun stuff! Lowell, this may be too late for you but I figured it out. Create a new Character style (I named mine “bullet non-italicized”).

In the New Character Style dialog box go into Basic Character Formats. Go into Font Style and choose “regular”. Highlight the whole bullet text. Open the Bullets and Numbering dialog box. Under Character Style select the new character style you just created. Now go back and highlight the text and italicize it. The bullet should remain un-italicized.

Peggy, Thank you for your answer but this is not really what I need. Your solution only works if all I want in the cell column is a number (1, 2, 3.).

My requirement is to have a true numbered list in the form: 1. The idea is that I can reorder or resort the column and the numbering will adjust automatically (like in a normal list in a paragraph). And I want to be able to do this without having to go to Inspector on every cell and manually specifying the value at which to restart the list.

This is a feature that's available in Word and that I find very convenient. I was just wondering if there's any equivalent in Pages. Thanks again for the suggestion though. Eric is absolutely right that this is difficult to accomplish. I cannot find a way to do this. The replies so far, although helpful, do not address the problem.

The problem is that we need to produce a table containing a list like: a. Green where each line is in its own cell. Sure, we can make each cell a list and manually enter 'start at' a, b and c, respectively. But that's silly. My list has 20 items and I am changing it as I work. I need Pages to do this work for me. There must be a way to accomplish this very basic function?
