Hello, Elgato hold somewhat of a Monopoly on Mac TV Tuner software with their EyeTV application. Other developers (Formac etc) simply couldn't match EyeTV. When it comes to hardware there is some choice between manufacturers (Elgato, Miglia etc) and choosing the best depends on whether you want:. USB/Firewire connection?. Twin tuners?.
HD, Digital or Analogue TV?. Cable, Satellite or through an Aerial?.
A Remote Control included (probably not as all new iMacs have a remote control). The best thing to do it either post a few more details here or fill in an see what is offered. Kind regards mrtotes. I own both a Formac as well as the new Elgato Hybrid. Bottom line is the Elgato Eyetv Hybrid rocks. It has the ability to decode both digital and analog. I use it with my HD antenna and receive all the channels my Plasma does with a crystal clear picture. The software lets you edit unwanted commercials, it also lets you record a program at the same day/time on a weekly basis.
It has a buit in program guide as well as a more detailed one you can access for programs farther out. You can also use Picture in Picture. The hardware is smaller than a cell phone and comes with a small input cable that has audio, composite video, and s video input so your covered if you want to make your old VHS digital. It works seamlessly with Toast so with the click of one button you can burn dvd's and video cd's. You can also open quicktime movies and view them in full screen. Obviously I give the Eyetv Hybrid 5 stars-and the Formac 1/2 a star. Good luck One other thing I just remembered, it supports the video iPods.
FYI Eyetv Hybrid $149 and I bought the Formac for a whopping $399, ouch!!!!! I wa surprised but even though my Mac is doing the ecoding it is not a system hog, in fact I have never notice a slow down when recording although you do need to turn off the option of it starting up automatically in live tv mode at start up that did slow down the start uo process. It still records in the background when needed without that automatic start up feature enabled. It is USB, I beleive USB 2 which is faster than standard firewire not that it matters because it works perfectly. I have it connected to my USB 2 hub and it works like a charm.
The Formac that I have is Firefire but it's a joke with terrible software and it is/was a CPU hog. In fact a 3rd party software called Vidi runs it better than Formacs. I owned a Elgato EyeTv 500 that had a remote and encoded rather than the Mac. I didn't like it but that was before I installed a decent HDTV antenna on my house and before Elgato updated their software to version 2 so I dumped it on eBay. It also only did digital and no analog.
The other Elgato product with two mtuners sounds interesting but for me I have Tivo buit into my Mac without monthly fees, the option to use digital or analog and all for $150. This is my product of choice. Lenn, thanks.
That is indeed something I had come across also. I'm torn between the Hybrid and the EyeTV 250. The 250 has the hardware encoder, and that is a big plus.
But the hybrid's digital capability is so tempting. Ultimately, I'd like to know the performance hit I would suffer on my iMac 24' (with the stats listed below) by using the Hybrid, and whether the quality of recorded shows suffers also. If that is the case, and since I don't get digital cable at home, I might just go with the 250. Apple Footer.
